The History

The last transcontinental link

The Western Pacific was built 1903–1909 as the final piece of a transcontinental route, a rival line into California through the spectacular Feather River Canyon — a water-level route with easier grades than SP's Donner crossing, though it cost a fortune to build.

The California Zephyr

WP's claim to fame was the California Zephyr, run jointly with the Rio Grande and CB&Q from 1949 — deliberately scheduled to take passengers through the Feather River Canyon and the Colorado Rockies in daylight. It was the most scenic streamliner in America.

A scrappy bridge line

WP was always the small, scrappy third player against SP and UP, surviving on bridge traffic and that gorgeous canyon. Union Pacific absorbed it in 1982, finally giving UP its own line into Northern California.

On this layout

Western Pacific is a major roster here — a full custom repaint of EMD E7s into WP 350/351, F7 cab units, GP7s, GP35s, GP40-2s, and U23Bs, plus WP freight cars. Orange, silver, and green run in force.
