▚ Hill's railroad
The Great Northern was James J. Hill's masterpiece — the only northern transcontinental built without government land grants, pushed to the Pacific in 1893 over Marias Pass and Stevens Pass. Hill built it to last, with easy grades and solid engineering, and it earned the nickname "the Empire Builder."
▚ Rocky the Goat
The GN's herald was a mountain goat — "Rocky" — set against Glacier National Park, a park the railroad itself promoted heavily to sell tickets on its flagship Empire Builder streamliner. Orange and green with the goat is one of the classic North American liveries.
▚ Into the merger
The GN had wanted to merge with its parallel rival the Northern Pacific for over half a century; the ICC finally allowed it in 1970, creating Burlington Northern. Late GN units wore "Big Sky Blue," a preview of the merger to come.

The Great Northern is represented by brass 4-8-4 steam, an SD9, and F7 cab units — the power that built and ran the Empire Builder route through the Rockies.
