▚ Chartered for a trail
The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe was chartered in 1859 to follow the Santa Fe Trail west out of Kansas. It never actually reached Santa Fe with its mainline — the New Mexico capital got a branch — but the name stuck and became one of the most beloved in American railroading.
▚ The Super Chief and the warbonnet
The Santa Fe built its legend on passenger service: the Super Chief, "the train of the stars," running Chicago to Los Angeles behind red-and-silver warbonnet E and F units. That paint scheme is arguably the most famous livery in the hobby.
▚ Intermodal pioneer
Freight is where the Santa Fe really shined late in life — it pioneered fast intermodal service, the "Super Fleet" of warbonnet-painted Dash 8s and Dash 9s in the early 1990s revived the passenger colors on freight power, a rolling billboard for the merger to come.

The Santa Fe is deep in the roster — warbonnet FP45s and F45s, GP60s, SD40-2s and SD45s, the F7/F3 cab units of the Super Chief, and a very rare brass-and-Walthers Super Chief passenger set. Red and silver runs here in force.
